It has been almost five years since my last vacation. I have taken a few days off here and there, but not a week long mind-clearing vacation. The last vacation I took was a great vacation, and the entire family (sons and wives/girlfriends) went to Hawaii. We were there for a week, and I don’t think that I touched my computer more than once or twice. I was still on JackFM and it was before the PPM entered the ratings scene, so it was a very peaceful vacation. Cue the Theme From Jaws.
I returned to Chicago, and two weeks later the “test” PPM results came out. It was June 2008 and my show went from being in the top 5, to 29th place. I knew it was the beginning of the end for me in radio. What I do doesn’t translate well to the idiot-proof Portable People Meter, and by December 2008 I was off the air. At that point, I could have taken a 2- year vacation as CBS had to pay off the remainder of my no-cut contract. but I wasn’t ready to stop communicating. It was clear that I needed to “re-invent” myself. So I did…
I started podcasting after very expensive negotiations with CBS about the rights to do so (the one thing I hadn’t foreseen when I negotiated my contract in 2006). It didn’t say I could podcast, but it didn’t say I couldn’t. Ambiguities like that are always very expensive in terms of legal fees. I was determined to stay in touch with my audience, experiment in what seemed like the perfect medium for me, and also quite interested in CBS continuing to pay me for the remainder of my contract. Ultimately we got it worked out.
On August 1st we will celebrate the Second Anniversary of the Steve Dahl Podcast Network. I am happy to report that after many growing pains, Our second year has put us in an even better position to grow, offer you more choices and try some new things that will blow your collective minds. I can’t thank you subscribers, enough for believing in this crazy idea of mine. Mark my words: everyone who does a podcast worth listening to is going to charge for it. This hybrid we’ve created is the only viable option.
We also need to thank our friends in the retail world for helping us keep the costs low and the quality high. It takes a sponsor with vision to understand that becoming a part of the show’s content and not an interruption to it, is the most efficient way to get the right message out to the right people. Thanks, again to you subscribers for supporting the people who support us. That what makes this work so beautifully.
We have prepared some very special “Archive” shows for our vacation week. I think you will like the combination of both old and new. Also, I am finally at a place where I feel comfortable enough with the people I have working for me to take some time off, so thanks to them too! I am not even bringing my computer with me to Arizona. I might try and bring a golf club on the plane just to fuck with the new TSA rules, but probably not.
It’s the “Dahls In The Desert” for a week of total vegetation (like a cactus). This time, all three boys are happily married, I have both a grandson and a granddaughter, and I know that I’m headed in a bold and exciting new direction with my career. I now control my own destiny. All I have to do is keep you happy, and everything works out well for me. The Podcast Network is just like having another, even bigger family that to which I feel completely connected. Just like Dahls, we all have each other’s back. How cool is that?
