Bob & Ron

Bob & Ron
A brief history of the Phishing Report and Bob & Ron’s Record Club:

Bob and Ron’s Record Club started out as an imaginary radio show. It began in 1995 and has enjoyed an extremely loyal fan base from the very beginning. Their audience started small, consisting of only those that would be hanging around B&RHQ (Bob and Ron Headquarters).

Their audience later grew to included listeners with a specially implanted receiver chip that was installed into their heads. HI Radio, short for High Imagination Radio, never really took off with the general public due the high cost, not to mention the high pain of getting the receiver unit surgically implanted. Also, the sheer clinical textbook insanity of the majority of imaginary radio’s programming scared off many potential listeners and advertisers.

One early convert to the new format was legendary Disc Jockey, Steve Dahl. Always on the cutting, and in this case bleeding edge (literally) of radio technology, Steve was an early fan of Bob and Ron’s imagicasts. He even invited them to host two weeks of his Best of Steve Dahl broadcasts on the terrestrial radio station, WCKG.

Ron was following, or "phollowing" as the kids spell, the band Phish at the time, so not surprisingly there was a lot of Phish talk those two weeks. The surprising thing was that people actually liked it, and they let Steve know. He then gave Bob and Ron the opportunity to host The Phishing Report, a radio show about the band Phish.

This was a radical departure from Bob and Ron’s imagicasts, which featured music from the mid '60’s through the late ‘70’s. So before Bob and Ron’s Record Club was ever aired on terrestrial radio, they already had a spin-off show. Well, actually a spin-off of a spin-off, if you include The Steve Dahl Show. And you should.

There have now been well over 250 broadcasts of The Phishing Report with Bob and Ron. Their rock show would have to wait until later.

Later, when the powers that be at WCKG needed someone to occupy the late night hours that had become available when “The Enema Show” did not pay to re-up it's time slot, the first thing WCKG thought could fill the hole left in the schedule, was…you guessed it….Bob and Ron's Record Club.

Yes, the imaginary rock and roll radio show that will psychedelicize your soul is now broadcast on terrestrial radio in Chicago on WCKG 105.9 FM. It is on from 2:00am until 5:00am, late night Saturday going into Sunday, or as Bob and Ron say, Satunday. Right after The Phishing Report which airs from Midnight until 2:00am.

Bob and Ron’s Record Club plays actual vinyl long-playing recorded albums. You will even hear some snaps, crackles, and pops, and its not Bob and Ron eating Rice Crispies, although that has been known to happen. Its what they like to call “warmth.”

The Record Club plays a variety of music. They play the artists you know but the songs you may not. Its definitely not the old Boston/REO/Journey same 100 songs over and over again crap that “Classic Rock” radio became. The Record Club looks back to FM’s early progressive days for inspiration.

There is music for the body and there is music for the mind. Music for the body picks you off the floor and hurls you into physical activity of whatever type you may prefer at the moment. Music for the mind floats you gently downstream, through the pleasurable twists and turns, ups and downs, rapids and calm waters.

Bob and Ron play music for the mind. In its strictest sense, it may impose some cerebral responsibility on the listener, because you can’t really hum along or have the tune pass through your head as you walk in the streets. But the ultimate good feeling that The Record Club generates will always remain with you, and the final emotional benefit is well worth the thinking toll. In general, after hearing Bob and Ron’s Record Club everybody's head will be more together.

So to all those that have been there since the early days of imagicasts and painful implantation devices, God bless you. And good luck with your class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of the HI Radio receivers and in your future difficult health battles.

For those of you that have yet to listen, please turn on your terrestrial radio this Satunday at Midnight, tune in to 105.9FM and drop out of your busy weekend and into Bob and Ron's Record Club and Phishing Report.

May Your Mellow Never Be Harshed.
