2:02 Terry has never been a big John Mellencamp fan. He did give a shout-out to the black men in Pink Houses.
2:03 Bonnie wants to go to the 2:06 premiere because she's a big George Clooney fan. Is she a Cloonatic? Terry's going to use that one in his column tomorrow but he better credit Steve.
2:04 Tickets to the premiere are $1500 because it's a Darfur charity. She doesn't want to pay that much but Terry can't get her in because he's covering it for the paper.
2:05 Is Stan asking Steve to get her in or something? Stan just liked watching Bonnie get this revved up about George Clooney.
2:06 Steve has no knowledge of this thing. He knows they're having a premiere here but that's it. It's at River East which is a multiplex theater so what kind of premiere can they really have there? It's a giant theater with a bowling alley and a condo and a hotel.
2:07 Terry doesn't like doing red carpet events because it's hard to get his questions answered as a newspaper reporter. The celebs usually gravitate towards the cameras.
2:08 What do any of these actors have to say anyway? You can ask them what they think about Chicago and they'll say they like it then you'll ask about Africa and they'll say things are bad.
2:09 Who really cares about George Clooney and Matt Damon, other than Bonnie? Are they at least staying at the Travel Lodge and putting the money back into Darfur?
2:10 Everyone who's at the premiere is supposed to fly out tonight but the weather might prevent it. Stan thinks they'll stick around for the Obama fundraiser. Stan is treating all these people like little army men, positioning them at different events in the city.
2:11 Stan also heard about the Jeremy Piven fundraiser as well. Steve was here for all that, he had Billy on his show. Of course Steve just wanted the cheeseburger, after that he was of no use to Steve.
2:12 Every time Billy is here he's dressed like a landscaper. He's always wearing those work shirts you get at Sears. The only difference between Steve's landscapers and Billy Dec is a good idea and a building lease.
2:13 Steve really doesn't care about celebrities. Terry has to care about them for his job but he doesn't like being on the red carpet asking people questions about Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef and how the Cubs are struggling.
2:14 Steve likes to have his movies separate from real life. He doesn't need to see a shrimpy Matt Damon buying a pack of gum at Fox & Obel.
2:15 It's the same thing with athletes too, Steve doesn't want to go into the locker room and meet someone, he just wants to go to the game and be entertained.
2:16 Usually when Steve meets people he admires he's disappointed afterwards. Is he glad Paris is out of jail though?
2:17 Didn't Paris say she was going to do her time in a real prison? Now she had a staph infection and she's under house arrest.
2:18 Steve doesn't really care about that either. He'd only care about Paris Hilton if he thought he could nail her and then only if he knew that wouldn't end up on the internet.
2:19 Steve does like when Paris gets out of a car with no underpants on. He doesn't want to meet her though.
2:20 People who live in LA don't really care about celebrities because they see them all the time. Pat Dahl was working at Warner Brothers when they were filming Ocean's 12 so he saw all of those people in the cafeteria everyday.
2:21 Steve and Stan and Terry are in showbiz, they should have more decorum about this stuff. That's why everyone else thinks radio is the lowest rung of showbiz.
2:22 Caller Jo reminds Steve about his obsession with Carlton Fisk. Steve did meet him and he ended up being a nice guy but it's not like they keep in touch.
2:23 Steve has meet a few celebrities that he admired over the years like Kevin James. Most of the time he'd rather just be a regular fan. 75% of the time he meet a celebrity and he's disappointed. Kevin James ended up being a bit of an ass anyway. Stan likes having man crushes on celebrities, like Peter Weller. Robocop?
2:24 Why does Bonnie want to go see George Clooney though? Would she have sex with him? If he found her on the red carpet and he said "hey you want to have sex?" would she do it?
2:25 Bonnie is hoping to talk to Clooney and book him on the show. But if he propositioned her, she'd probably say yes.
2:26 Steve doesn't dislike George Clooney or Brad Pitt though, he just doesn't care about celebrities. Stan thinks if Steve and Bonnie went they'd have no problem getting in.
2:27 Steve doesn't want to go to the premiere, he'll probably go to the Sox game if it doesn't rain. Although he doesn't want to go to the Sox game either, they're dead to him.
2:34 It's time now for Music Snob Corner featuring our own Pete Zimmerman. Pete is great, as always.
2:35 Is Pete always great? He always seems great but Steve likes to beat him down by the end of the day. It's part of the fun.
2:36 Pete is sporting his Stephen Colbert t-shirt. It has a bear on it and says "Godless Killing Machine". Steve always thought it was a Cubs shirt. That's initially why Pete got it. The Cubs do kill as a team but so do the Sox.
2:37 The Cubs did win yesterday, they've won 4 of 5. Pete thinks it's Alan Trammell's leadership but he says it's not him. Meanwhile the Sox have won 1 out of 100. Steve's supposed to go to the game tonight but he really doesn't want to. The mystique of the Yankees isn't enough for him.
2:38 It's supposed to rain a lot tonight so hopefully they'll cancel it. Pete has to give Steve credit for even wanting to go to a game after a 5 hour show.
2:39 Lately Steve's been trying to do stuff even though he doesn't want to. If he doesn't do anything he has no life. Last night he went to Menards even though he didn't want to. After 5 or 10 minutes he was glad he went though.
2:40 Steve needs 0w40 oil for his car and you can't find that anywhere so he might have to go to a mechanic.
2:41 Steve tried to order some online but his card was declined. Every one of Steve's cards is bad because Janet shops at TJ Maxx and someone stole a bunch of credit card numbers from them. They might still be doing it.
2:42 It's not like Steve and Janet are living in a trailer, they don't need to stop at TJ Maxx. They need to shop at places with higher quality merchandise and secure credit card transactions.
2:43 Someone found some oil at Advance Auto Parts. Steve went all over the place looking for this oil. Just because becuase he drives a high-performance vehicle doesn't mean he can't go to Pep Boys.
2:44 Steve actually likes going to the auto parts stores and then going in the back and looking at the tires. They all look so cool up on the racks. Steve worked at a gas station as a kid so he knows how to service tires.
2:45 Steve's been trying to do more stuff on the weekends too. It's hard for Pete to do much on the weekends during baseball season. Once the day is over though you're mad you didn't do anything.
2:46 Even if Steve doesn't want to go to a baseball game once he gets there he's glad he came.
2:47 The tapes today were about The Pipettes, the band Pete selected for today. Steve heard them during the tapes with The Deaner on WGN.
2:48 Pete thinks of The Pipettes as rocking versions of the group in Dreamgirls. They sort of have that Ronettes/Phil Spector sound. It's good to capitalize on that now what with the murder trial.
2:51 Welcome back to Motor Oil Talk on WCKG, your FM Motor Oil Talk station.
2:52 Caller Alan is on his way back from work. It's a nice afternoon at least now but there's a tornado watch in effect and also a warning for high winds.
2:53 Alan wanted to let Steve know that the 0 in 0w40 represents the viscosity of the oil. Usually they take the 0 off so Steve should just stay he wants straight 40.
2:54 When Steve was at the auto parts store he just looked through all the oil and couldn't find what he needed. Then he went to the lube place and they had no idea what he was talking to. At least now he'll be speaking the lingo.
2:55 The Pipettes are playing at Empty Bottle tonight. Maybe if the Sox game gets rained out he'll go see the Pipettes. Then he'll head to the Playboy party at Rockit.
2:56 Pete has tickets for the show and he's excited about it now but he knows at 7:00 he won't want to go to a show that starts at 9:00. Pete should go though because he'll be bummed out when he reads about it tomorrow in the paper. He's just like Steve that way, they're both anti-social.
2:57 The same thing happened last month when Pete had tickets to the Peter Bjorn and John show. He didn't want to go but then he went and they didn't go on until 11:00. Steve heard on The Exert that the show was killer.
2:58 Someone should call over to the Empty Bottle and tell them that Pete played The Pipettes' song today, that might get him backstage at the show.
2:59 Song: Pull Shapes, The Pipettes
3:02 Buzz liked that one. Steve did too but if he wants to hear that sound he'll just listen to old songs. It might be fun to see them live though and Pete is younger so listening to The Ronettes isn't the same thing.
3:03 They seem to be from England, Pete can talk to them about fish and chips when he's backstage tonight.
3:08 Steve probably shouldn't mention this but was that the second Simpsons drop or the first?
3:09 The other day Pete started the show with a Simpsons drop and then started thinking about his perfect game where the entire show would be Simpsons drops. Then he jinxed himself. We might have to send Pete down to Charlotte now.
3:10 It was The Angels who sang My Boyfriend's Back. Buzz is not familiar with them.
3:11 Mark Czerniec is on the phone, he's warm and dry. That's how Buzz thinks of Mark. Steve was wrong earlier when he mentioned the tornado watch.
3:12 The National Weather Service website has been intermittent today which is when we need the site. They might want to get a bigger server. There's a tornado watch in effect until midnight for 15 Illinois counties, mostly the western part of the listening area. It's also in Wisconsin.
3:13 Steve must have been looking at the high wind advisory which is in effect for Cook County and the collar counties until 6:00 PM. Steve likes high winds but Mark doesn't because he has plants.
3:14 When Steve went walking today the cicadas were all getting blown out of the trees and landing on him. He probably had sex with about 100 cicadas today. In 17 years some really funny cicadas will be emerging and it'll probably freak the neighbors out.
3:15 Mark is jealous because he hasn't heard any cicadas by him. Steve keeps forgetting to bring in his cicada tape.
3:16 Mark is right on the edge of this brood but he hasn't heard anything. Even the cicadas know that Wisconsin is for losers.
3:17 It's quite a life the cicadas have carved out for themselves. They have sex, they die and their offspring are born 17 years later. They've done pretty well for an organism that has no defense mechanisms and serves no purpose other than being part of the food chain.
3:18 Mark reminds Steve that when thunder roars, you should get indoors. That's courtesy of Brant Miller. The weather is supposed to get pretty bad tonight though. It's hot out now but a tornado watch means the weather is going to get cold.
3:19 Buzz can't believe it's going to get cold out, it's 90º now. Steve's trying to find out the temperatures for tomorrow, he probably should have kept Mark on. It's supposed to be in the low 70s tomorrow. Normally when the temperature drops 20º you're going to get tornadoes. Mark is back on the phone.
3:20 Steve tries to get Buzz to cooperate with the weather department but he won't. There's? There is of course a long-standing feud between the news department and the weather department, Buzz won't even go in there. He calls them "those bastard scientists."
3:23 Pete sort of has a streak going with the drops today, so far they've all been from sitcoms or short-form comedy TV. He's had My Name is Earl, Simpsons and now King of the Hill. Pete doesn't want all that pressure on him.
3:24 For those of you keeping score at home, and why would you, Pete has a mini-streak going on. Who keeps score at baseball games any more? Maybe at Wrigley because they don't have a real scoreboard.
3:25 Pete likes to keep score because it stops him from drinking so much. Is it also because it prevents him from talking to the person he's with? When Steve and Pete went to the Sox game Steve kept score while Pete went to the bathroom.
3:26 Pete doesn't remember Steve keeping score from him but he still has the scorecard. It could have been Matt Dahl, he keeps score sometimes.
3:27 Ed Farmer keeps a nice score card, Steve has one of his at home. It looks really professional but it probably has to be since it's only him, Ed Farmer and Mark Zarang.
3:28 Ed keeps a pro scorecard, Pete should try to get some of the blank ones he uses.
3:29 Last year Pete and Brendan went to a Cubs game with Chef Hans and sat in the press box. Bruce Levine was there but he didn't ask any annoying questions. It seemed like most of the guys in the press box weren't even paying attention to the game. That's because they all get recaps at the end.
3:30 Most of the guys in the press box just sit around commiserating about the people they work for. Les Grobstein was updating his website, Grobber.net.
3:31 Steve's on Grobber.net right now, it's got a nice picture of The Grobber with some headphones on, or cans as we call them in the industry. There's also a picture of some dogs and Grobber holding a baby. Is that his grandson? Grobber's son worked for one of the CBS stations here for a while, he's a nice kid.
3:32 Is Grobber the voice of the Chicago Sky? Their logo is on his site. Does Pete know? Has Pete dropped out of this conversation? Because Buzz doesn't know anything about the Chicago Sky. He didn't even know what Iron Chef was!
3:33 The Grobber is the voice of the Sky and the games can be heard on WVON which stands for Voice of the Negro.
3:34 There are a few recaps from the most recent Cubs and Sox games but they look like the ones he's given by the team. He says he files these reports somewhere but where does he work now?
3:35 You have to wonder why Les has full-access though. Steve has a press-pass for the Sox but he has to get a new one everyday. He's on the verge of going to a press conference and trying to lighten the mood a little bit.
3:36 Steve thinks Ozzie or even Lou would appreciate a funny question but the other reporters probably wouldn't like it. Also the team wouldn't like it because of the bad PR.
3:37 As irritating as Bruce Levine is with his annoying questions it does give us stuff like the Ed Lynch tape. Bruce says "don't say that" just like Drew does.
3:38 Les was the one who broke the Ed Lynch tape and the Lee Elia tape so maybe Steve needs to reconnect with him. There's got to be more good tape out there, although these days it all ends up on TV eventually.
3:43 Pat Boyle is on the phone from Comcast Sportsnet. The Sox game on Comcast on Monday will be in HD even though they're in Philly. Comcast is based out of Philly so someone must have pulled some strings and got a few cameras.
3:44 So now we get to see the Sox playing really poorly in HD. Steve doesn't even know what to say about the Sox. They just look like they don't care. It's not just the bullpen, they can't hit, they can't field.
3:45 It's like the White Sox are finally having a World Series hangover. Last year they were still glowing from the World Series win.
3:46 Last night was Cicada Night at The Cell which seems like rock bottom in terms of promotions. Steve read in the paper that there were more cicadas on base than White Sox players.
3:47 Do they really need to whip out Cicada Night when the Yankees are in town? It's the Yankees, what more pull do you need?
3:48 The Cubs are all of the sudden a lot more happening, or at least they're better than the Sox. Part of it is that the NL Central is so bad.
3:49 Then yesterday Barrett and Zambrano were both crying about their fight. They said they cried when they apologized but then Zambrano was actually breaking up when he retold the story. That's more disturbing than the actual fight.
3:50 Steve wouldn't mind seeing a few Sox players getting into a fight though. And Ozzie needs to do something too. He said in the post-game last night that he just needs to have some fun.
3:51 The Sox are now 8.5 games behind Cleveland while the Cubs are 6.5 games back of the Brewers and only 1.5 behind the second place team.
3:52 Anaheim won the Stanley Cup last night and no one watched it. The NBC exec who decided to put that on TV was probably fired.
3:53 They don't even have snow in Anaheim! And now the Stanley Cup will reside there for a year!
4:00 Ozzie says he needs to start having fun with baseball which is fine with Steve as long as that involves winning.
4:01 No one is refunding Steve's money for poor play as of yet. They've had his money since February. They put out a good buffet but Steve usually only has that on the weekends.
4:02 Live read: Gierczyk Properties
4:03 As far as Steve knows, the ugly baby isn't a real baby. Buzz's daughter believes it's her long-lost older brother that they had to give away because it was too ugly. What a lovely thought.
4:04 Don't forget when you hear Steve introducing Margarita from the Cubby Bear North show be the 10th caller and win 2 tickets to this Saturday's show at The Pearl Room in Mokena.
4:05 During one break we accidentally ran that sounder plus the promo that's been running on the other shows so there might have been two giveaways. It's more fun to have the funny sounder though.
4:06 Matt and Brendan will be at Outpost Bar and Grill in Lockport tonight from 10:00-midnight giving away tickets. Don't forget if STeve were charging for the tickets they'd be $34.95.
4:07 Steve might have jacked the price up a little bit just because of how long it's taking him to memorize the lyrics to some new songs they'll be playing this week. Steve has no techniques for memorization other than repetition.
4:08 Steve's been playing Cicada over and over and over trying to remember the lyrics and that's just a stupid novelty song.
4:09 Headlines with Buzz
4:10 Paris Hilton will serve the remainder of her jail sentence at home with an ankle bracelet. She's got Al Sharpton against her now because of the hypocrisy of the whole thing. Hulk Hogan was also weighing in.
4:11 Why does Al Sharpton care? It's not like she killed anyone. What did she even do?
4:12 She violated her parole by driving drunk so she should do some jail time. She already did 5 days and 40 days house arrest will be hard for a girl who loves to go out and loves to shop. It's probably not a stylish ankle bracelet either.
4:13 Buzz doesn't really mind that she's doing time at home. He didn't want her doing her time then writing a book and coming out like a rose. Now she comes out looking like a bit of a weasel.
4:14 Steve kept talking about how she was going to do her prison time and that would have given her street cred. She wouldn't even eat the prison hot dogs, ironically. When did she become so choosy?
4:15 President Bush's choice for surgeon general is being met with opposition by the gay and lesbian community. Dr. James Holsinger said that homosexuality is unnatural and used pipe-fitting as a metaphor for genitalia. Since the pieces don't match up you open yourself up to disease.
4:16 Steve gets that certain parts go together and you make babies but you can get diseases that way too.
4:17 George Clooney, Matt Damon and Ellen Barkin are in town for the star-studded Ocean's 13 premiere. Buzz will not be going, he didn't really like any of those movies.
4:18 Steve liked Ocean's 11 but he checked out in the second one after Julia Roberts was playing a character who was pretending to be Julia Roberts because she looked like her.
4:19 Blues Fest kicks off tonight in Grant Park. Steve didn't know what was going on but he drove by and people will already set up. Why doesn't Buzz play at Blues Fest?
4:20 Buzz has never tried to get on the bill for Blues Fest but he will next year. He wanted to establish himself in the blues community first and then get a good band together.
4:21 By the way, Steve went to the ATM today and got a $20 to pay Buzz on Saturday. He also owes him for the Cubby Bear show so he can expect a big fat envelope with $40 in it.
4:22 Steve had his weekly promotions meeting today but he was only half-listening and shopping online for a new computer. Jill the marketing director had been out to The Pearl Room for a site inspection which to Steve means she was trying to figure out where to hang the banners.
4:23 Jill called it a bare-bones concert venue which means no food. That's fine with Steve because he doesn't want to play a dinner theater show. There will be food backstage for Steve and Buzz though.
4:27 Steve also learned in today's meeting that we have hourly sponsors on the show. Then there were new sponsors and they were mad that things were getting mixed up.
4:28 Maybe someone should have told Steve about the hourly sponsors so there would be no mix up.
4:29 There's also a plan to do a broadcast from the Crosstown Classic at The Cell. Steve wanted to be in the parking lot but Drew couldn't make that happen so now they're at gate 5. Of course Drew doesn't know where that is though.
4:30 Steve was already irritated because he had to come in and record some video for the new technology CBS is using on their websites. Steve didn't want to do that because he hates the website.
4:31 The first time Steve went to an actual TV studio to record the video but then Drew told him we have an in-house studio. All that means is an empty room in the Jack FM offices and a green screen.
4:32 Steve had to kick Drew and Jill out because they were bumming him out. He did the first one and it was funny and everyone laughed but the camera guy wasn't ready for him. So the second time Steve did it no one laughed.
4:33 Then Steve had his meeting after that and Drew laid gate 5 on him. Steve knows where gate 5 is but he doesn't want to broadcast from there.
4:34 Steve wanted to broadcast from the press box but Drew said they won't let him. Steve wants to like Drew but he makes it very hard.
4:35 Once Steve kicked Drew and Jill out of the in-house studio he cranked out three good takes. It's like that one time they were at the United Center and Drew and Jill were just staring at him when he was doing his show.
4:36 Drew and Jill stood right outside the door waiting so they might have heard Steve tell the camera guy "next time you need me to do something just call the office and I'll come down. There's no need to bring them, they add nothing."
4:37 Based on the recon Steve got at the meeting he doesn't think he wants to do the Crosstown broadcast. He knows where gate 5 is and it would be weird and awkward to broadcast from there.
4:38 No one's going to pay attention to the show because they'll be watching the game. Steve thought it would have been much better in the parking lot. And as Buzz knows, Steve's White Sox game experience is first class so why would he want to be in a tunnel under the bleachers?
4:39 It was Steve's idea to do the broadcast since they were up at Yak-Zies for the first Crosstown series. But it's not even a full-station remote, it's just a half-assed attempt to make Steve happy.
4:40 Doing a broadcast from one of the gates where people are walking in and not paying attention won't work. It'll remind Steve too much of the time he spent with the Dahlfins on the county fair circuit.
4:41 There are a lot of other live remotes coming up but it just seems like we should do something with the whole station since most of the on-air people are Sox fans.
4:42 It's easier to do a live remote from Wrigleyville because there are so many bars up there. Steve could go to Pancho Pistolas but he's sort of losing his taste for the live broadcast.
4:43 Yak-Zies ended up turning out fine but most of that was because of Ed Farmer. If he hadn't shown up Steve would have gone out to the alley to take a leak and kept going, with all due respect to Buzz. Then Buzz could have fired up his wing-eating contest.
4:48 The National Weather Service issued a special alert for high winds, up to 90 mph. Those are hurricane-force winds.
4:49 Do we need to talk to Tommy? What else is there to say other than 90 mph winds? Plus we just played the Garry promo where he basically does all of Steve's jokes about Tommy. They were as funny hearing them back as when Steve first thought of them.
4:50 Steve calls Drew to invited him down for a quesadilla. Steve just made Drew's day. Steve's not mad at Drew, he's just disappointed in him. DON'T SAY THAT!
4:51 Steve's not really mad at Drew it just seems like there's a lot going on that doesn't really benefit him.
4:52 Buzz thinks all of these remotes are sort of new territory for Drew. He was at The Score though, he should know how to do a remote.
4:53 Drew does Steve know good. He talks a lot about it but never gets anything done. So that doesn't make Steve mad, he's just identified it and is trying to work around it.
4:54 It's not because of The Package thing either. It works way better for Steve if they come up with something else to call the station that he can make fun of.
4:55 It is frustrating that Steve gives them good ideas and they don't take them but also depend on him to do so many other things.
4:56 It's like when Drew tried to get Steve a jet to fly to Des Moines but the best he could do was get him the same price Steve could have gotten on his own. There's a lot of that going on.
4:57 Steve did see that we're doing those focus groups on the website, Drew can explain it all when he comes down for his taco.
5:00 It's time for the Five O'Clock Taco Bell which is happening right at 5:00 today. How sweet is that? No Drew though. Did they break up?
5:01 Here's Drew now, he's got a quesadilla waiting for him with his name written all over it. This is the first time Drew has had the new Taco Bell quesadilla.
5:02 Drew's quesadilla is a nice change from the beating he's been taking from Steve. Steve's not beating him!
5:03 What happened to Drew's dream of an all-day remote? Is it because Steve and Buzz are black?
5:04 Drew didn't want to put anyone at The Cell or in the parking lot at 8:00 AM because there's nothing going on.
5:05 Garry complained the whole time when he was at Yak-Zies because there was no one there.
5:06 It's hard to talk to Drew because he always disagrees with everything Steve says. He's like one of those chicks who loves to argue.
5:07 Drew still wants to go to a Sox game with Steve. That'll never happen, he needs to stop asking. The only time they'll ever go anywhere is when Steve takes Drew out to a cornfield to whack him like one of the Spilotros.
5:08 Drew was at the game last night for Cicada Night. He wants to know where they got the costumes from? Probably a costume store!
5:09 Steve really needs to take a break because of the stupid rule Drew made up where you have to play commercials within 15 minutes of when they're scheduled to air or someone has to go through and write down every one that aired late.
5:10 Drew cites Sarbanes-Oxley for the reason we have to do that. That and Human Resources are probably the two biggest cop-out answers around here.
5:15 The studio door is still opened a little back. The good news is that the other door that closes silently is on backorder. Call Buzz crazy but he likes the doors that close. So does Steve.
5:16 Just for the record Steve's not mad at Drew but he's very argumentative. Steve thinks he knows radio but Drew also thinks he knows it so they're probably better off not talking.
5:17 Steve tried to convince Drew that Garry could draw a crowd to The Cell at 8:00 AM but he wouldn't budge. Maybe Garry just doesn't want to do the remote?
5:18 Steve could go back to hating management, that seems to work much better. The problem is that he gets caught in the taint and actually likes Drew. He's a likable fella.
5:19 Steve just tries to stay out of it and not think about things that bug him unless it's funny.
5:20 Song: I've Seen That Movie Too, Elton John
5:26 The big Ocean's 13 premiere is happening tonight at the River East theater downtown. That might impede Buzz's trip home because all of the streets around the theater are closed off. That means LSD will be backed up.
5:27 George Clooney is just trying to save Africa. Buzz wishes him the best of luck but he still needs to get home.
5:28 River East seems like a weird place for a premiere, they're better off having it at the Chicago Theater.
5:29 It would be funny to watch George Clooney walk down the red carpet then have to go up an escalator. Will they paint the escalator red?
5:30 Time for some Random Phone Calls. Steve would just like to say that he's really not trying to be mean to Drew. They just don't agree on a lot of things lately. Steve can see why they wouldn't in some cases but not in others. He'd rather just not think about it but Drew keeps forcing himself on him like a date rape.
5:31 Steve told Drew that Garry could draw people to The Cell but Drew disagreed. Maybe Garry just doesn't want to do it. There's sort of a weird thing going on here with Garry where Dan and Drew are really close to him. It has the feel of them trying to prove they can build a successful station without Steve. Buzz doesn't get that feeling but he's not involved in any of this.
5:32 Maybe Steve should just go back to hating management. It's just funny in those meetings where Drew doesn't know where gate 5 is but he's willing to send Steve there anyway. But God forbid Garry is there at 8:00 AM.
5:33 The first caller wanted to tell Steve that she just had a Taco Bell quesadilla and it was wonderful.
5:34 The next caller wanted to tell Steve that he really made him laugh the other day when he was talking about the gu at the Sox games wearing the yellow M & M's jacket. He was watching a Sox game with a few friends and they all thought it was Steve until he corrected them.
5:34 The next caller wanted to let Steve know that there's a lot of tailgating in the parking lot at The Cell and there will be a ton of people there for the Friday Crosstown Classic game.
5:35 That's another good point but Drew won't listen anyway. He'll have to have a focus group first just to see if it's viable.
5:36 The next caller thinks Steve should help Tom Thayer get a show on the station. Tom seems pretty happy doing the Bears game and then heading off to Hawaii in the off-season.
5:37 The next caller has a boss that's very similar to Drew. He's argumentative for the sake of being argumentative. Eventually you just give up. Steve will just save all his good ideas for the next station.
5:38 The next caller sounds weird already but not in a bad way. He wanted to know if there would ever be an opportunity for an Ask Janet or Ask Aimee segment.
5:39 The next caller wanted to remind Steve that it's only 95 days until NFL kickoff. It can't come fast enough with the way our baseball teams are playing.
5:40 That reminds Steve that he should probably start being nice to Drew so he can help him get hooked-up at Bears training camp. He was so close to breaking up with him and now they'll have to have make-up sex.
5:43 Chef Hans is here for Meat Talk. Buzz puts his dancing shoes on for Hans' theme.
5:44 Hans missed Steve last night. Where was he supposed to be? Hans thought he'd see Steve at The Cell for Cicada Night.
5:45 Hans was 11 rows behind home plate so he would have seen Steve if he'd been there. The Bertucci brothers say hi, they run all the food concession in the Bullpen Bar.
5:46 Hans was at the game with a bartender from New York. He made a little wager and lost. Steve's advice to Hans is to not bet on the White Sox.
5:47 Hans also saw Stormin' Norman Van Lier. It's good that Hans can go to a game and get new names to drop.
5:48 The first meat question is not a meat question at all but a recommendation from Hans about what kind of fish to cook on a charcoal grill and how to season it.
5:49 Hans recommends swordfish, salmon or halibut with some olive oil, salt, pepper and herbs. You want to cook both sides over indirect heat to get the grill marks then finish it on tin foil to avoid flare-ups or sticking meat.
5:50 Steve's not even in the Meat Talk email account so he'll have to get there now. Hans will be having a Meat Talk of his own this weekend in Michigan City.
5:51 Emailer Scott wants to know the difference between wet aged and dry aged beef. We've had this one before but it's good anyway.
5:52 Wet-aged beef sits in a vacuum-sealed bag in it's own juices, or blood as Hans calls it, in the fridge. Dry-aged beef hangs in a meat locker or on a shelf and the enzymes are naturally broken down which makes it tender and yummy.
5:53 Hans prefers dry-aging, they even have a dry-age room at S & W. Has Buzz ever seen it? Did Hans try to push Buzz down on the cot he has in there?
5:54 The last time Buzz was in S & W he had two nice ladies with him. What about Guy Code Hans? Does Steve need to dump that?
5:55 The final emailer wants to know if cooking steak with the bone-in makes it taste better or if that's just romance talk.
5:56 Steve wants to give the dinner to the dry-age guy. The fish guy wasn't even asking about meat!
5:57 Hans might be dropping a George Clooney on us next week, you never know who will come in tonight.
6:00 That was some weird kind of Family Guy tape right there. What did it even represent? Pete can't really explain why Peter was being so weird, it's a long story.
6:01 Pete was talking to a couple of chickens who had talked him into ordering halibut
6:02 Live read: Townstone Financial
6:03 David Hochberg is on the phone. Steve has widened the search for a clubhouse. He drove by the one David recommended yesterday but he wants to keep looking.
6:04 Steve has realized what he wants, some sort of old theater or concert venue. Steve will take an old theater in the worst neighborhood they can find.
6:05 Steve's always wanted to have his own theater so he can put on puppet shows for himself.
6:06 Steve told David that he doesn't need a credit check. He doesn't want David lording his perfect score over Steve's bad score.
6:07 The real estate taxes at the place Steve looked at yesterday were $16,000 a year but that's only because the previous owner never bothered to get them reduced. They should have only been $9,000.
6:08 Steve drove by a really sweet old ballroom that had been fixed up, possibly with federal money. Steve's not against buying a place in a developing area.
6:09 Steve doesn't want to be in a dopey industrial building. If it's a cool one that's fine but he doesn't want to be in an old door factory.
6:10 Buzz has rehearsed in some very bad places so his standards are very low. Part of Steve wants to build a prototype rehearsal space that can be franchised and will feature a music store and laconic strippers.
6:11 Steve has some sports and this seems like a good time to do it.
6:12 Buzz kept getting notified about a potential no-hitter but there's nothing in Steve's sports about it. That's probably because it wasn't a no-hitter.
6:13 Steve's getting some info from Pete now. Curt Schilling had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. Where's your God now bloody sock boy?
6:14 The Sox look to split their 4 game series with the Yankees tonight. Jose Contreras takes the mound for Chicago.
6:15 The Cubs start their 4 game series against he Braves tonight with Rich Hill taking the mount.
6:16 Steve did have the Curt Schilling story in his sports, apologies. The Red Sox won 1-0 and Schilling will probably say that's all that matters. Where's your God now bloody sock boy?!
6:17 A-Rod snapped at photographers today while shopping on Michigan Avenue today with his wife and their child. He shopped for Bentley's and Lamborghini's then bought a Notorious B.I.G. shirt at Barney's. How notorious can you be if they're selling your shirt at Barney's?
6:18 Tennessee Titan Pacman Jones made some trouble at an R. Kelly record release party in New York. Is R. Kelly ever going to go to trial?
6:22 Matt and Brendan are out at the Outpost Bar and Grill in Lockport with tickets for the next Dahlfins show on Saturday.
6:23 Steve doesn't want to be mean to Pete because he did a good job on his segment earlier but he seems to get really disoriented by the end of the day. Steve thinks it's because as the day goes on his TV gets louder. As the TV gets louder he becomes more disoriented.
6:24 Pete's trying to listen to CNN or ABC while listening to the show. Steve thinks that when the TV is that loud it causes Pete stutter.
6:25 Yesterday Steve and Pete had a little issue with the intercom in his studio. Once Steve went into Pete's studio he realized why he was disoriented.
6:26 Anything that comes through the intercom in Pete's studio comes out of a small speaker that nothing ever comes out of. We need to get this whole intercom figured out though. Steve apologized and they hugged it out. It was a little weird though because Pete was kneeling the whole time
6:27 Steve got his box of Mobil 0w40 or straight 40 as that one caller said. The box actually said 0w40 so Steve doesn't think he said it wrong. Jim from the Jiffy Lube on Ashland sent the box over.
6:28 Steve's car burns a lot of oil because it has a turbo in it. Steve's not green, he doesn't want to be green, but everyone else can be green when he's gone.
6:29 Steve doesn't think he's personally causing environmental problems. If they can make all the factories and everything else green and then Steve is still causing environmental problems, he'll buy a Prius.
6:30 Steve doesn't want to run out of time to do the news but we should probably grab another box of tapes. Pete thinks he might need tape with the next one, it's really heavy. Buzz doesn't understand how one box could be heavier than the next.
6:31 Pete had a half full box which he filled up with tapes that he'd taken out of another box. So can this box be thrown out then?
6:32 Do we need to keep a Real Sports with Bob Costas? Or Steve Young's retirement?
6:33 We've also got half of an episode of Monk. Great!
6:34 From 12/5/99 a Bears post game and Oakland vs. Seattle. Also some King of the Hill, Simpsons, Sex in the City and news.
6:35 So this box can go then? Steve finds it extremely weird that Pete laid another row of tapes in one box to make it hard to close.
6:36 We're down to about 8 boxes now, it's getting very roomy in there. Steve's thinking of putting in a nice living room set.
6:39 News with Buzz
6:40 Bond was set at $5 million for the man accused of kidnapping and murdering 18-year old Kelsey Smith. That's the guy who was on the Target surveillance tape right?
6:41 Paris HIlton was released from jail early but there's been no explanation why. Rumors have run from a mental breakdown to a rash.
6:42 Harvey Levin used to be the legal advisor for CourtTV. Now he's anointed himself the legal expert for all of Hollywood.
6:43 Paris is under house arrest so it's not like she's out shopping. It's a form of confinement which is bad for someone like Paris who's out all the time. At least now she'll be able to take an oatmeal bath and get rid of those hives.
6:44 From Paw Paw, Michigan, authorities received what they thought were several fake calls reporting a man being pushed by a semi.
6:45 The caller said the guy was being dragged but pushed is so much more optimistic. He was in front of the truck so that's pushing.
6:46 Buzz thinks that would be pretty exciting. It's probably exciting now that it's over but not knowing how it's going to end at the time probably isn't fun.
6:47 Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora (Sambuca) has checked himself into rehab, no word on what it's for. Probably drugs or alcohol or maybe both. They work really well in combination.
6:48 A spokesperson for the Chicago Health Department told city officials that allowing dogs to sit at tables of outdoor cafes could spread food-bourne illness via saliva or hair. EW!
6:49 Why do people have to hitch their dogs up in front of a restaurant like they're a horse? Is it Steve's problem that you decided to buy an 80 pound dog even though you live in the city?
6:50 Steve is all about having a dog but why do you need to bring it to a restaurant? Even where Steve lives, there's a downtown area and people always bring their dogs and tie them up outside.
6:51 The Chicago City Council as approved a liquor license for the Flirt Girl gym on the west side. The gym will feature a stripper poll and will also serve alcohol. How far west will that be?
6:52 Steve is demanding that Buzz play Blues Fest next year. He'll launch a campaign to get the band there.
6:57 Brendan got recognized yesterday while getting his haircut. He recognized him as Brendan from the Matt Dahl Show too which is good.
6:58 Matt was making fun of Brendan for getting his haircut by a dude but then he remembered he also gets his haircut by a dude. Matt goes to a barber though while Brendan was at a salon.
6:59 Mike Dahl has been going to get his haircut at this place out in the burbs for two years. He has a thing for the girl who cuts his hair but he's never done anything about it. Now she's engaged or married or something.
7:00 Matt thinks that Mike didn't want to say anything because he really likes how she cuts his hair and doesn't want to mess it up.
7:01 Matt and Brendan will be out at the Outpost Bar and Grill in Lockport tonight giving away tickets for the show on Saturday.
7:02 Remember, just because the tickets are free doesn't mean there's no value. If Steve was charging money the tickets would be $34.99. The next time he does a show after these 6 he might charge even more than that.
7:03 Matt had a great time at the last show, it was definitely $35 worth of entertainment.
