2:02 Matt and Brendan saw The Simpsons during their 5 hour break yesterday but they're not sure if they should go again.
2:03 Steve heard their show last night and it sounded fine, maybe a movie in between is just what they need. Then they head off to their rigorous pre-show prep which involves Matt sitting at his desk eating a sandwich and staring at the wall while Brendan sits behind him eating a sandwich and starring at the wall. It sounds like they're having a grueling week.
2:04 Steve's just kidding, it's impressive that Matt and Brendan are doing 5 hours each day this week. Plus they've got 2 shows at Lollapalooza on Friday.
2:05 Steve will not be broadcasting from Lollapalooza on Friday. He has a bad attitude going in already and if someone else gives him a bad attitude it won't be good.
2:06 That's not really Steve's scene anyway. Matt and Brendan will hopefully have some good tape to play on their show. They don't have to worry about Jim and Pete stealing any good interviews because they won't talk to anyway.
2:07 Pete and Jim don't even talk to Steve during the show. Everyday Jim says hello to Steve and then Steve asks him how it's going, he says OK and that's it. They do talk when they're on the air though.
2:08 Steve heard Matt and Brendan doing some cross talk with Garry today but it was somewhat nonexistent.
2:09 Yesterday Matt and Brendan were sitting in their office when Garry was finishing up his show. He plays his last break after he talks to Stan and Terry everyday, which Matt and Brendan didn't know about.
2:10 Yesterday Garry was calling for Matt and Brendan to come in so at least he did that. It's hard to riff with Garry at the end of the show because the last thing he does is news.
2:11 Then he asks Matt and Brendan what they have planned for the day which is a hard question to ask. Steve hates when people ask him that. When he was negotiating his new contract with the late great Hollander brothers one of them asked Steve what he talks about on the show.
2:12 He didn't know what to say because why would he think now about what he's going to talk about later? Since then Steve has learned to just mention one current event that he'll talk about like dogfighting or the baseball trading deadline.
2:13 Maybe a movie today is just what Matt and Brendan need, it's a good place to go and relax. It's probably better than going to the beach together. They'd get involved in beach volleyball game and start hitting on Lincoln Park trixies.
2:14 Matt and Brendan go to the River East theater which is close to the station. Steve recommends PJ Clarke's for some pre-show dinner as well.
2:15 River East is where Steve and the boys saw Borat. It's also where Steve and Matt made that sweet move where they cut to the front of the line. The theater they were in was right across from the men's bathroom so they waited their and just sidled in.
2:16 Brendan could use his bag to save a seat between him and Matt as a buffer. Brendan uses to bag to smuggle in Coke which he opens during a loud preview or when he coughs.
2:26 Song: Big Yellow Taxi, Counting Crows
2:29 Pete played that because of the taxi cab rate increase right? Steve didn't hear the entire show open but he did hear someone shouting.
2:30 That was Burt Natarus shouting from a few years ago. Pete was wondering if Steve happened to see Burt Natarus standing outside the ABC studios during the news.
2:31 Buzz actually saw that the other day, he was standing next to the guy wearing all the weird suits. "I LIKE TO GO DOWN TO THE ABC STUDIOS, GRAB SOME CARAMEL CORN AND WATCH KATHY BROCK!" When you put it that way it doesn't sound so bad.
2:32 Steve doesn't understand why taxi cab drivers don't get a standard cost of living increase. Most other people get them in their jobs.
2:33 Buzz does have some sympathy for the cab drivers although on the news last night not a single person interviewed on the street was for fare increases.
2:34 It might be easier to take fare increases if they're done incrementally. It's like that Com Ed rate increase. It was frozen for 10 years and then all of the sudden it goes up 30%. It's better to have it go up 3% per year.
2:35 People don't want to give cab drivers a fare increase because of a lot of them are jerks. Buzz will hold back on the tip if the cab driver is a little standoffish. Steve just expects to ride in a clean cab with a guy who knows where he's going.
2:36 When Steve first came to Chicago they had the Checker cabs with the nice jump seats and the driver's were all characters. They knew where they were going and could suggest other ways to get somewhere. It was kind of fun.
2:37 Steve doesn't need a cab driver who's going to talk to him, just some common courtesy. The last time he was in a cab he was going to Joe's Stone Crab. The driver asked him which one and then yelled at him that there were too many Joe's. So Steve got out of the cab and got into one with a driver who knew where it was.
2:38 It would behoove the cab industry to buy gasoline as a commodity like the airlines did. Maybe that wouldn't work though, you'd have to go to a central location to refuel.
2:39 If cab drivers do get a rate increase they should use the extra money to buy a map in their native language.
2:43 Steve doesn't take cabs very often but when he does he always lays a $20 on the guy. Part of the fun for him is that the cab driver usually doesn't want him in the cab but Steve knows he's going to give him a good tip no matter what.
2:44 Are we pretty much off the cab topic Pete because Steve doesn't have anything else about cabs. He's probably taken 10 cabs in the last 20 years.
2:45 Steve just saw Pete running down the hall to fill up his water bottle which is disconcerting with a minute left in the break. Steve was walking back into the studio when all of the sudden Pete's studio door flew open and he was running down the hall with an empty water bottle. It wasn't even a premium bottled water, it was Safeway or something.
2:46 Pete actually has a Fiji water so that is premium. He buys a 6 pack and then reuses the bottles a few times. The bottle also travels back and forth to work with him. Does he drink it on the EL then?
2:47 Pete used to go with Aquafina but they've been getting some bad press lately. Tina of course informed Steve at his Super Bowl party a few years ago that Dasani is really sewer water. It's not sewer water it's just municipal water that's filtered.
2:48 When Steve was a kid everyone in California had those big water coolers in their house but he's not sure why. Steve's family put their cooler in his room which worked out great for him except when his dad came in every morning to fill up the coffee maker.
2:49 Fiji was very big in Hollywood for a while and it's still in most hotels. Now everyone in Hollywood drinks that Voss water which comes in a glass bottle, looks like vodka and costs about $12 per bottle.
2:50 Jeff Schwartz bought a case of that Voss water for the station but ended up drinking it all himself and taking it with him when he left.
2:51 Buzz remembers the Steve Dahl water but nothing ever came of it. Steve met a listen in Mexico a few years ago who worked in water bottling and he saw him again at Blarney Island. The whole thing was more trouble than it was worth for Steve though.
2:52 Buzz went through the same thing with his recent invention. There were people interested in making it but it seemed like it was a lot of trouble.
2:53 Steve doesn't like the Voss water because it looks too much like a vodka bottle. He was going to switch over to Fiji but it doesn't fit in Steve's cup holder and that's a must.
2:54 Caller Michelle wanted to alert Steve to a story she just saw on Fox or something about people who reuse bottles of water at work or home. According to that story when you put different water in a new bottle you open it up to all sorts of bacteria and spores and other things.
2:55 Steve has offered Pete free water but he won't take it. Brendan takes pop from Steve's Green Room fridge and brings it to the movies! Is Michelle related to Dave Savini in anyway?
2:56 Imagine what gets on Pete's water bottle when he takes it home on the EL, or when he brings some skank into his apartment.
2:57 Pete's probably not going to change his ways and he seems to have a healthy immune system so he should be alright. It's still disconcerting to see a grown man run down the hall with a water bottle.
2:58 It's easier for Pete to go down the hall and refill than to go all the way up to the office. Steve has a cooler in the studio, Pete is welcome to take some of that.
2:59 Pete goes through a lot of water, probably 8-10 bottles a day. That's weird because Steve has never seen him take a leak. Is he the guy putting boogers on the wall?
3:04 Steve would like to add that Pete's cool look with the Fiji water bottle is undone by the layers of Marshall Field's shopping bags that he carries tapes in. He looks like a shopping bag dude.
3:05 Buzz thinks Pete doesn't care what he looks like. If he did though he could be workin' some beef on the train ride. It's an hour each way, that's plenty of time. He looks like a psycho with all those tapes though.
3:06 Pete has actually stopped using the Marshall Field's bag after a minor tragedy. One of them came apart as he road the escalator down to the EL station, spilling tapes everywhere.
3:07 Now he's using a bag from the Apple Store. Steve has a few cool bags Pete could use if he wants. He also keeps forgetting to give Buzz a Fender bag he got him for doing all the Dahlfins shows.
3:08 Pete likes the Apple bag because it sort of looks like a backpack. Is he still holding out for the Apple Store messenger bag?
3:09 Pete doesn't bring home many tapes in the summer because there aren't as many shows on. He usually only brings tapes home on the weekends to watch all of the episodes. Steve can't really complain if Pete is working. He'll probably need a heavy duty bag when the fall rolls around.
3:10 Steve doesn't know why Pete gets down about his life because it sounds supercool. He's living the dream, carting VHS tapes back and forth in a Marshall Field's bag, drinking out of a half-empty, dirty Fiji bottle. God knows what's in his backpack, probably a human head. He should be talking to women on the train ride home, trying to convert a lesbian. They might think he's a girl for the first half hour.
3:11 Pete's not much of a small-talker so he never strikes up conversations with women on the train. When he drinks though he's completely opposite.
3:12 Steve calls down to Jim because he doesn't fully trust Tina's info about the trade deadline. He asked her when it was and she said she wasn't sure. The deadline is over, it ended at 3:00 Central.
3:13 The only thing that happened in Chicago is the Sox dealt Mackowiak which is great for Steve because he hated him. He's from Oak Lawn too which calls into question the entire Little League system of that community.
3:14 Rob Mackowiak was horrible but he always had a look on his face like he wasn't. If you're going to be bad you can't have that cocky look on your face after striking out.
3:15 Jermaine Dye wasn't traded and the Cubs didn't do anything either but why should they, they're fine. Jim is cautiously optimistic about the Cubs. Be careful what you wish for though.
3:16 Pete would just like to add that Jim is the worst about the Cubs. He's always on a ledge with them. Steve thinks Jim would survive a Cubs World Series win but Pete would throw himself in front of the very train he takes home every night. Steve wishes he would have done that after the Sox won, just so he wouldn't have had to see Rob Mackowiak play.
3:21 As far as Steve knows the only trade that happened in Chicago that he knows of is Rob Mackowiak. Tina was not a big Mackowiak fan but she always liked to yell "OAK LAWN" to him.
3:22 Tina does have some big trade info but it's not about the Sox. Instead of getting Jermaine Dye the Red Sox acquired Eric Gagne. Tina says "we" when she talks about the Sox because she's a co-owner. She bought in when she was 1.
3:23 Tina's glad the Sox didn't trade Jermaine Dye but Steve thinks they should have. It's a contract year, he should be playing better. Whenever he's up to bat Steve yells "choke" but he's also done things like accuse the beer vendors of taking steroids.
3:24 Tina does have a Rob Mackowiak stat but Steve's not interested. Tina wants to be fair and balanced because she's a reporter. Steve doesn't care about that, when he picks a target he goes for it.
3:25 Rob Mackowiak is hitting .278, 6 home runs and 36 RBIs in 85 games. So is Buzz, who cares? It's still nice that Tina looked that up in case his family is listening, it'll take the sting out of what Steve said.
3:26 Steve is not a mouthpiece for Tina Fondleus, doesn't she know that? He's not going to say something nice about him or his family. They have a lovely lawn, has Buzz ever seen it?
3:27 Actually, Steve's glad Rob Mackowiak is gone because every time he said his name he had to double-clutch and not say Rod. Rob's gonna love San Diego so that's good news for Tina. What's the greatest city in the world Mud? San Diego.
3:28 So that's all Steve knows about the trading deadline but we'll probably be talking to someone from Comcast, provided their phones are working today.
3:29 The Dow closed down 146 points. US stocks plunged over fresh credit worries.
3:30 Steve has learned a new term listening to the Noon Business Hour, retail investors. Those are people who use services like Schwab and there seems to be a lot of disdain for them. Steve's glad he's not a retail investor.
3:31 Steve's heard that term used several times over the last few days with disdain. It's very tempting to become a retail investor though. Buzz is always seeing in the paper that monkey could pick stocks.
3:32 The problem is that by the time most people get information about good stocks all of the financial people have made money off of it. That's why you're better off leaving it up to a some Coke-addled guy on Wall Street.
3:33 Steve has that Fender bag for Buzz. It's a great looking bag but he shouldn't feel any pressure to use it in front of Steve.
3:34 Buzz could probably even use it for traveling but it would make a good gig bag as well. It's protect his investments.
3:35 Steve thinks Buzz's investments are fine but he realizes that Buzz's clock is ticking a little faster than his. He's got 10 years on Steve. Buzz isn't planning on stopping any time soon though, he's here until the end. His next gig is the grave.
3:36 At times Steve has thought about retiring and moving out to LA to be in he movie business but what's the point of climbing your way up to the top of one industry and then starting in a different one?
3:37 Buzz periodically prays to the radio gods and thanks them for his job. He can't imagine what it would be like to work in an office everyday. On this job Steve and Buzz can just get on the air and rip on Drew in front of everyone. They don't even have to do it in secret.
3:43 On the phone is Chuck Garfein from Comcast Sportsnet. Chuck just saw Mike Dahl. He still works there right, he wasn't leaving with a box of his stuff was he?
3:44 Mike is actually helping Chuck on a story he's doing about the Chicago Sting if anyone remembers them. Steve does remember them, coach Willy Roy, Carl Heintz-Granitza!
3:45 Chuck caught up with all of those guys as well as Cubs President John McDonough who got his start working for the Sting. That's actually how Steve met John, he did a few things for the Sting.
3:46 Steve's also pretty sure that Wayne Messmer started singing the National Anthem at Sting games. Steve remembers seeing a shrimpy dude in a tuxedo wondering who he was. Then he started singing.
3:47 There was a game the Sting played in the early 80s against the San Diego team in order to advance to the championship game. Comiskey Park was packed for that game while at the very same time the Cubs and Cardinals drew 3,000 people at Wrigley Field.
3:48 That's funny because every Cubs fan Steve talks to says they've been fans for life. Where were they when the stadium was empty? When Steve first came to Chicago the Cubs didn't draw anyone. That's where the whole Lee Elia tirade came from.
3:49 Chuck was wondering if Steve had the Lee Elia tape. Of course he does, he didn't just fall off the turnip truck! He has the Lee Elia tape right next to the Ed Lynch tape.
3:50 Chuck has never heard the Ed Lynch tape. Did he just fall off the turnip truck? Pete has the Ed Lynch tape ready right now so he'll play it while he finds the Lee Elia tape.
3:51 Buzz's favorite part of the tape is when the entire clubhouse rises up against Bruce Levine. They might not know what he did but Ed Lynch wants him gone so everyone starts yelling.
3:52 Chuck will say that Bruce knows how to ask a question that gets him an interesting answer. Steve finds him very irritating. He does like the way he says liaison though, bringing some French class to the clubhouse. Next thing you know the Cubs have an all-French outfield.
3:53 So the trade deadline has passed and the Sox traded Rob Mackowiak to the Padres. San Diego is the greatest city in the world so he'll be happy there.
3:54 In return the Sox got single A pitcher John Link. So they got 2 single A pitchers this week? Steve likes to think that the teams stash these guys down in single A and they're really good but that's probably not the case.
3:55 Steve doesn't really care who they got for Mackowiak. He would have taken a few pounds of ground beef for him.
3:56 As far as Chuck knows everything is going alright with the Bears. Nothing against Bourbonnais but he's glad he doesn't have to cover it. It's not that he doesn't like Bourbonnais, he's from Floosmoor.
3:57 DId Chuck play soccer at Homewood-Flossmoor or was he a cheerleader? Chuck actually played radio. Now look at him, he's on TV in his hometown. No matter what his family might say at Hanukah that's pretty good.
3:58 The only thing Chuck knows about the Bears now is that it's really hot in Bourbonnais. Steve did just read something about that Dusty Dvoracek guy and how he redeemed himself.
3:59 Chuck's Sting piece will air this Friday, it's his big manifesto. Mike Dahl was helping him put together a promo. Is it called Chuck's Love Letter to the Sting?
4:00 Steve still has the Lee Elia tape to play if Pete is ready with it.
4:01 That's a good one but Steve prefers the Ed Lynch tape, there are so many nuances, like Bruce's pronunciation of liaison or the way the clubhouse rises up.
4:02 Steve also likes how incredulous Ed Lynch is when Bruce tells him that without him he doesn't have a job.
4:08 The only thing exciting that happens in a soccer match is when a player goes down and gets carted off the field. Everything else is boring as hell which is probably why it never caught on here.
4:09 Live read: Gierczyk Properties
4:10 The casino is opening up in New Buffalo in a few days, hell yeah! The other day Steve saw something on a South Bend TV station about all the crime that the casino will bring.
4:11 What crime? All you do is get off the highway, go to the casino, gamble and leave. Do they really think everyone in the area will gamble their money away and then become prostitutes working the downtown New Buffalo area?
4:12 That actually wouldn't be a bad development. Steve's still hoping that guy gets the strip club opened up.
4:13 Headlines with Buzz
4:14 Shoe bomber Richard Reid, currently serving 110 years in prison, believe Allah will eventually free him. He also has no remorse for what he tried to do.
4:15 Starting Saturday travelers will be able to carry on breast milk and lighters on all flights in the U.S. Steve's going out on Saturday, getting some breast milk and a Bic and flying somewhere.
4:16 The family of Ron Goldman now owns publishing rights to OJ Simpson's unpublished book If I Did It.
4:17 So if they own the rights that means if someone did publish it they'd get all the money? Maybe it'll happen now.
4:18 Another town has banned the wearing of baggy pants, this time in Texas. That seems unconstitutional to Steve.
4:19 Matt Leinart has agreed to pay $15,000 a month in child support to the mother of his child. She had previous asked for $30,000. He should have spent that money on rubbers.
4:20 The owner of an Atlanta car dealership allegedly killed two employees after they kept asking for raises. That'll send a message to the rest of the employees.
4:26 The next beach party is coming up on August 10th at Papi Chulo's. Friday Steve will be giving away more VIP tickets to the broadcast but everyone who doesn't win is welcome to come.
4:27 Joining Steve and Buzz at the broadcast will be May or May Not. That's the name of the band. Steve's not messing with Buzz or anything.
4:28 Papi Chulo's is at a marina so Steve and Buzz will be able to hang out with all the boaters. Boaters are fun people as it turns out. Many of them are fun, hideous drunks.
4:29 Steve's a boater but not a good boater. He spends most of the time trying to get his boat to the point where he can take it out. Then his boys take it out and don't leave it ready for the next person to use. Steve is the only person that thinks that.
4:30 Buzz agrees with Steve totally but he doesn't have a boat. There's a lot to do when you own a boat, especially if you're not there all the time. Plus everyone has something to do with their boat in the summer.
4:31 Steve's working on things with his boat but he hasn't taken it out yet this year. The only thing he's done is took Mike Dahl to get gas for the boat. Steve understood the pressure Mike was under of not wanting to drive the boat in front of his girlfriend but he didn't say anything about it.
4:32 But then there's pressure on Steve because he doesn't want to mess up in front of Mike's girlfriend either. He didn't though, it was sweet and flawless.
4:33 When you have a boat you can't believe how much gas goes into it, it's like there's a hole in the bottom. It just keeps going in.
4:40 So this May or May Not band is local but they're making it big. That's the name of the band too, Steve's not doing a Who's on First thing. They're going to be playing at Papi Chulo's.
4:41 Song: City Girl, May or May Not
4:43 Buzz should bring his harmonica to Papi Chulo's, they'll probably want to jam with him. Buzz is wondering how we know them.
4:44 Buzz, act like you belong! Steve's not sure where they came from but they sound good. They could be a Pete band or a Mary band or a Jim band. Who knows.
4:45 They're a local band and they have a gig the night of Papi Chulo's so it works out perfect. Buzz is wondering where the gig is so he can make plans.
4:46 They're playing the Double Door that night, Buzz has played there. They have two doors right? Steve can probably get Buzz on the guest list if he wants.
4:47 The band might not be happy to have Steve or Buzz at their show but their parents probably would. The kids in the band might not listen but their parents probably do. It's like when Plain White T's were here and they asked Pete who listens to this show.
4:48 Then Pete had the Plain White T's using the busted microphone that he refused to take out of the studio. It is now gone though, he sent it in to be fixed.
4:49 Steve needs to talk to someone at Shure about the microphone situation. When all of the studios were remodeled they put in Electrovoice, replacing the Shure mics that Steve was using.
4:50 Apparently those mics from Shure were only on loan and once Tom from Shure saw that they weren't being used in the main studio any more he wanted them back. He called to get them back and apparently someone he talked to made him mad and it all went from there.
4:51 Steve's willing to pay for the mics just to make it all stop. He loves Shure, how often does he talk about his E3 earbud headphones? Steve's a strong proponent of all their commercial products and that's where all the money is.
4:52 The only thing that will satisfy Tom from Shure is to get the mics back but John the engineer won't relinquish them.
4:53 The whole thing is complicated further because Buzz wants to talk to Shure about modifying one of his mics. So he doesn't want to buy anything he just wants to tie up a few of their engineers.
4:54 Paul Natkin, Steve's photographer, also works with Shure and he listens to the show everyday so maybe he could step in. The station put the mics in, what was Steve supposed to do? He can go down and get them from the other studio if that will help.
4:55 Steve broadcast from the Shure microphone booth at the NAB when he first got to WCKG. Of course that was also the time he was suspended for an hour.
4:56 When Steve first got to WCKG he had a lot of problems with management. There were a lot of tools here. The General Manager was useless, Steve had a history with the guy in promotions and the Sales Manger was mad he wasn't the GM and always hassled Steve when there were problems with advertisers.
4:57 They would take Steve off for an hour at a time and then talk to him about the problem. Of course all of those people are gone and Steve is still here.
4:58 Steve's going to take a break and then he has something new and exciting from Taco Bell. Steve's a Taco Bell insider but he thinks outside the bun. He's outside the bun but inside the tortilla.
5:03 It's time for the Five O'Clock Taco Bell. It's Taco Tuesday also and even though Steve doesn't have a taco he feels that what he does have will blow Buzz's mind.
5:04 Steve is recovering from a last-minute Drew Hayes incursion. There are clocks and timers everywhere but he launches into a 20-minute conversation.
5:05 Plus he was asking a stupid question. Well they're all stupid but he was asking if he could use that Package jingle that the guy sent Steve. He said he could already. Now whether or not he'll give it to him is another question.
5:06 Steve's going to start the music up again so as to not have the stink of Drew on it. Today, Steve and Buzz are debuting the Grande Quesadilla which comes in that bag with the window on it. Buzz will notice that his quesadilla is on thick panadero bread.
5:07 Steve's gonna bring in a hammock for Buzz because he'll need a nap after finishing this thing off.
5:08 You can't even get this quesadilla yet, it comes out on Thursday. Taco Bell has always been good but it seems like they're dialing it up. They could have stopped at the Extreme Cheese and Beef Quesadilla but they went further.
5:09 Live read: Townstone Financial
5:10 Steve assumes David was able to help these people out but it doesn't say. It's probably a built-in excuse for David to call in. First he'll say something inappropriately familiar like "I couldn't stop thinking about having sex with you on that cruise" and then he'll explain how he helped these people.
5:11 David hasn't called in yet, maybe Steve really did lose him to Eric and Kathy.
5:14 David Hochberg has called in but on a listener line. Did we change the number on him?
5:15 David got a new cellphone and he was fumbling with it trying to find the hotline number so he just called the request line. He should get another new phone because this one doesn't sound good.
5:16 David is still trying to help out Armando and Sally from the live read. He's shopping their loan out to some of the sub-prime lenders.
5:17 Is that going to cause the stock market to crash because Steve's been hearing a lot about them lately?
5:18 Steve's got the sports coming up in a few minutes. There's not a whole lot to talk about with the trade deadline though.
5:19 The Sox traded Rob Mackowiak but the Cubs didn't do anything because they don't need to do anything. They've got it going on, why would they want to bring anyone in to mess up their chemistry? Apparently they've been fine since they traded Michael Barrett
5:20 Buzz was a Michael Barrett fan for about a month and then all of the sudden he went nuts. He's always been nuts though, right Pete?
5:21 Pete confirms he's always been nuts. When San Diego got him they went into a bit of a spiral but now they have Rob Mackowiak so they'll be fine. What's the best city in the world Pete? San Diego!
5:22 Steve got an email from a listener letting him know that there's a transcript online of Rick Sutcliffe's drunken appearance on a San Diego Padres broadcast. The emailer also requested Steve act it out.
5:23 It seems like the Michael Barrett trade really turned the team around. A lot of people say it was the Piniella tirade. Was Barrett still on the team at that point?
5:24 Pete can't remember the timeline exactly but he's pretty sure Barrett was still on the team. Steve's going to call Uber Cubs Fan Jr. Jim and see if he knows.
5:25 Jim is always on the ledge about the Cubs but he won't be the one who throws himself in front of a train if they win the World Series. There are a lot of ups and downs though.
5:26 The Lou tirade was the day after the Barrett/Zambrano fight, he was trying to take attention off of them. The Cubs have a big game tonight, Jim is hoping they can recover from yesterday's irritating loss.
5:27 It must have also been really irritating to have two former White Sox do all the damage offensively. The Cubs can't hit lefties either which might be a problem they want to fix. Or they could just do what the Sox did and be bad against both lefties and righties.
5:28 Steve didn't mean to belittle Pete's Cubs knowledge. Jim knows a lot about them too, almost too much. He's got the black girlfriend and she used to date a Cub so he might be sensitive about the whole thing.
5:29 Steve is still waiting for the 5:30 sports audio delivery, that's how Pete does it right? He likes to wait until after the sports on the 5:00 news to see if there's anything he can use.
5:33 Why does Steve need to see John Cusack at a Cubs game over and over like last night? He was just sitting there practicing his pouty face, probably trying to score some tail. Wrigley is a good place for that though.
5:34 A few weeks ago Steve was at a Sox game and Vince Vaughn was there. He had a security guard but people kept coming down to bother him anyway. The guard seemed fairly useless.
5:35 There was one guy who came down three different times to talk to him. The first time he had a ball but no pen to autograph it with, then he came back with a pen and no ball and then the third time he came down with his baby.
5:36 The guy wanted to take a picture of Vince holding the baby but he couldn't get his camera to work and ended up getting a picture of himself. Actually the second time he came down with something impossible for Vince to sign like Jell-O.
5:37 Live read: Balance for Life
5:38 Pete is still laboring over the sports right now. He didn't find anything fresh yet. He likes to break the fresh stuff on the radio.
5:39 Steve doesn't know why WBBM-AM doesn't act as a news-gathering source for him. They just view him an someone taking up valuable office space on their floor and using their private bathroom.
5:40 That private bathroom is all slate with a drain right in the middle which you don't see in a lot of office buildings. It's comforting to know that if something did go wrong it could all be hosed off easily.
5:41 Steve's featuring the band May or May Not today to get the buzz out there.
5:42 Yesterday Brendan was sporting a t-shirt that said buzzkill on it. Buzz was talking to Matt and Brendan for several minutes before he noticed the t-shirt and of course had to ask about it. It sends out a real mixed message though but Buzz thinks he'll rethink things the next time he decided to wear that shirt.
5:43 Once Brendan was wearing a shirt that said "Steve Dahl Sucks" but he claimed it had nothing to do with Steve.
5:44 Song: Holiday, May or May Not
5:46 That song had a Beach Boys feel to it. When Steve sees them next Friday he'll lay his Brian Wilson story on them. First they'll think he's a dork and wonder why they're parents made them come out and then they'll think he's cool once they heard he wrote songs with Brian.
5:53 When Vince Vaughn was at the Sox game Thom Brennamen and Mark Grace were calling the game. Brennamen thought if anyone could get Jennifer Anniston it would be Grace.
5:54 Grace of course denied he could get her but his silence spoke volumes.
5:55 Alright it's time for some sports. As Buzz might remember Brendan is not here all week because he's and Matt and filling in for Stan and Terry and doing their regular show.
5:56 Tina has been writing the sports and Steve has become a mouthpiece for her. Who knows what she'll have him saying today. Tina's not going to change her values just because she's writing the sports for Steve! She is woman, hear her roar.
5:57 Some of today's sports might have been de-Tinaized a little bit. Buzz heard that going on during the break.
5:58 Right off the bat, Tina's saying the war in Iraq is wrong and yet Steve is just turning his attention to sports.
5:59 The White Sox traded Rob Mackowiak to San Diego for pitcher John Link. Why can't everyone have a hybrid car? Also the Catholic church's stance on women is wrong!
6:00 Mackowiak said it hurt to be traded from the team he grew up watching and idolizing. Maybe he should have played better. Tina didn't add that, it was Steve.
6:01 Earlier in the show Tina wanted to present Steve with some positive Rob Mackowiak stats. If she's going to be answering phones this week Steve has got to get with the program!
6:02 The Sox game starts in a few minutes so Ed Farmer probably won't be calling in. Somehow though, his weekly call-in segment has moved from Tuesday to Wednesday.
6:03 Ed probably likes to call after something good happens which Steve can appreciate. Steve does hate Rob Mackowiak though so the trade was good for him.
6:04 The Cubs face the Phillies tonight at Wrigley. Jason Marquis faces off against Adam Eaton. That's something Tina adds to the sports, faces off. Steve would never say that.
6:05 Lou Piniella took note of the fact that it was two former White Sox who won the game for the Phillies last night. Who asked him that question? Did they really think Piniella didn't realize it? Every team studies all of the stats of every player they face. Plus the player's names are on their jerseys.
6:06 Things aren't looking good for the Bears second-round draft pick Dan Bazuin after he sat out practice today and had a wrap around his leg. That's not a chicken caesar wrap either.
6:07 Tonight in baseball three different milestones could be reached. This is the part of the sports where Steve takes a step back and puts everything in perspective. Barry Bonds could tie Hank Aaron's home run record, Tom Glavine could get his 300th win and Alex Rodriguez could become the youngest player to hit 500 home runs.
6:14 That drop was from My Boys which had it's season premiere last night. Steve had to fill out a long questionnaire about the show to see if they'd advertise and then they never did.
6:15 In that drop they were doing their fantasy baseball draft. The girl said her guy was Derrek Lee and her friend's was Derek Jeter. Jeter's not even a first baseman!
6:16 There were several cringe-inducing moments in last night's episode including all of the Charlie Trotters references.
6:17 Pat Dahl was going to work on that show but it didn't happen. Steve and Buzz would be glad to consult them on their Chicago references for a few hundred dollars a day.
6:18 News with Buzz
6:19 Retired Lt. General Philip Kensinger is being accused of lying to investigators about the death of Army Ranger Pat Tillman.
6:20 If Steve were serving with Pat Tillman he'd probably resent someone who gave up millions of dollars, an NFL career and nailing chicks in Arizona to serve in Iraq. He seemed to have a gung-ho attitude too.
6:21 A Washington Senator is calling for the impeachment of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
6:22 If we start impeaching everyone who lies in Washington, DC there will be no one left. Just keep calling Gonzales and dwarf and eventually he'll just leave.
6:24 The family of Ron Goldman now owns the rights to OJ Simpsons unpublished book If I Did It.
6:25 Buzz is hoping they'll release the book under a new title, If I Did It, Which I Did.
6:26 Today Show viewers were shocked this morning when anchor Robin Roberts announced she had breast cancer. Were they shocked because that's an inappropriate thing to say on the show?
6:27 Roberts will have surgery this Friday and then begin treatment for the cancer. Did Charlie Gibson examine her on the air?
6:28 Is that information we need to know though? The TV people must think that by talking about it they're helping other people.
6:29 After Katie Couric got a colonoscopy on the air Buzz totally rethought the entire thing and also had one done.
6:37 Pete thought it was weird that Robin Roberts referred to her and Diane Sawyer and Thelma and Louise. That movie didn't end well.
6:38 It all depends on how you look at it. For Steve it meant that Thelma and Louise finally shut up.
6:39 Steve wishes her the best but can't anyone keep anything to themselves any more? Steve's trying to repioneer that.
6:40 If you're not well enough to do the show then take some time off. If Steve wanted to watch someone struggle with illness he'd become a nurse. It just seems like a lot of lay on people at 7:30 AM.
6:41 Steve has one more May or May Not song to play because he likes to do things in threes. It's a good way to introduce Buzz and other people who don't know them to their music.
6:42 Song: Work by Nine, May or May Not
6:45 Steve's not sure if he has enough email for a mailbag segment but he's going to play the theme anyway. Steve only has one but that's alright.
6:46 This email is from another satisfied customer. You can't have enough of those. This woman is sick of hearing The Package slogan and if she hears it again he won't need dinner.
6:47 This is an email that has a mixed message Steve doesn't understand. He will say there are too many zipper sound effects being used. We should be more judicious with our zippers. Maybe Brian Urlacher and Matt Leinart should have also been more judicious with their zippers.
6:52 Steve and Buzz were chatting during the break-and by chatting he means the spoke for about 10 seconds-about The Package. Buzz surmised that the stations is running The Package into the ground.
6:53 Buzz is probably right. They don't have to do it all in a month. They don't need to have every single person say "the package". Drew is short though and short guys tend to overdo it.
6:54 The promos that John Castino did sound great though but there might be too much zipper. Zippers should always be used sparingly.
6:55 On the other hand what else are they going to say? Maybe we don't need to have a promo every break.
6:56 It was Steve's idea and they've done a good job with it but there are too many zippers.
6:57 One thing Steve suggested to Drew was having people on the street say The Package, especially girls. Drew looked at Steve like he was crazy and said he tried but no one would say it.
6:58 Girls won't say it to Drew and Adam but get Matt and Brendan out there with a flesh-colored microphone and you'd have something.
6:59 Matt and Brendan did see a movie today, I Know Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. They also respected the one-seat boundary between them where they put their snacks.
7:00 Brendan forgot to grab a Coke from Steve's fridge so he made Matt stop at Dominick's before the movie. Matt also got some snacks but still had popcorn at the theater.
