Today Buzz and I talked with Drew Peterson and his attorney, Joel Brodsky. At some point, Joel said I should fix Drew up and then I jokingly said something like “We should do a Dating Game.” Drew wanted me to come along as the Dating Game chaperone. Buzz said “Let’s take this off the air” and I pretty much thought that was the end of it. There’s no way I can fix girls up with a murder suspect (presumed innocent), and I don’t really want to. It sure was bizarre to even have that conversation with the actual Drew. Since then, things have gotten really crazy. It was a spontaneous on-air bit.
It was an interesting and unusual segment, and that’s all it was. It’s not every day you get a call from Drew Peterson and his lawyer, and my curiosity got the best of me. I’m glad it did, since I thought it was oddly compelling and scary as hell all at the same time. I had no intention of ever going through with the Dating Game idea, once I got off the air and had the chance to think it through. Besides, Drew is still legally married, so he’s not really allowed to date yet. I’m very old school. What can I say? We got a few interesting quotes from Drew, and learned that he doesn’t like my impersonation of him.
If you Google Drew Peterson as of 5:30 PM on Wednesday January 23rd 2008, you get a picture of me, a story about Drew appearing on the show, and an implication that some lucky girl will win a “Date with Drew.” No one ever bothered to ask me about it. It seems to me the lucky girl is the one who never has contact with him. Even his stalker, who left the note in the mailbox, didn’t leave her number. I think it’s best to wait until Stacy gets back home safe and sound and the Savio case has been ruled an accident before The Steve Dahl Show helps Drew get back into the murky waters of the dating pool. I know he’s lonely, but I bet he can tough it out.
So check out the podcast (hour 3) if you missed our Drew Peterson interview this morning. It was the real deal, and it was mind-blowing. There is no way, however, that I can disrespect a missing mother of two by making a game out of fixing up her husband. I bet Drew and his lawyer feel the same way too. It’s not worth the trouble it would cause. It was a great payoff to our months of Drew-watching and that’s enough for me. I’m glad Buzz was there to share it with me and provide moral support. Joel asked if Drew should prepare some questions for the bachelorettes. Part of me really wants to see what they were. Yikes!!!
