Last night we went to Longhi’s, a legendary spot on Front Street in Lahaina. You can literally dine while whale watching. Check out their website to see how special the restaurants are.

Bob Longhi is the unofficial mayor of these parts. He can wear a strand of pearls and make them look manly. He has provided hospitality to every movie star, musician and politician who makes it to these parts. Jackson Browne and Jack Johnson did a tsunami benefit here tonight, and I am sure Bob was adding spirit to the proceedings. His daughter has joined him in expanding his empire to the other side of Maui as well as to Honolulu. They love food and people and treat both with aloha. He will grace the show today.

Yesteday’s show brought chanting to the Steve Dahl experience. I expect that Steve will be trying that at home. The gourd that Charles Ka’upu uses is as big as a toddler, but it is light enough to strap on his back and depart with. Hawaiian percussionists are wise, because the drummer does not get stuck hosting every practice (due to the hassle of moving a drum set) Maybe young Matt Dahl would enjoy a gourd as his 20th birthday gift tomorrow. If he could cop a Native look, he would be all set. He would look adorable in the lava- lava, but I discourage the tattoos.

Tonight we will be headed to see the amazing assemblage of Hawaiian talent , featuring Eric Gilliom and Barry Flanagan at Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea.

I know it will be unforgettable. All the musicians have been so generous and cohesive on the show- it is the spirit of Hawaii distilled into its most enchanting art form, music.
