Despite my best intentions, I neither went boating today nor did I go to the driving range to work on my golf game. I suppose I could still get it together to do one of said activities, or possibly even both, but I’d say the chances of that happening are non-existent. As of 5:00 p.m. I am already parked on the couch eagerly awaiting the Home Run Derby from Yankee Stadium. Unlike most people I know, I really enjoy the Home Run Derby. Yes, it takes forever, and no, there’s no real reason to have it, but I like watching the players interact during the competition. It’s lighthearted, but still hardcore, if that makes any sense. Even if it doesn’t make any sense, I’m still going to watch.
I am very happy with the way the 2008 MLB has been going around here so far. Both teams are in first place at the All-Star break, and both teams have the capability to make it into the playoffs and possibly go all the way. I saw Ryan Dempster go ape crazy in the dugout after he gave up three runs to the Giants on Sunday, and I have to say that I like seeing guys get pissed off. After four days of watching Paul Konerko and other various White Sox not even a little upset with their spotty play, I like seeing a guy lose it because he’s losing it. I want to give Paul Konerko, Jim Thome, and the other culprits the benefit of the doubt on that, but they might want to look a little irritated when things aren’t going so well.
I know it’s a pipe dream, but I sure would like to see the Cubs and Sox go at it in the World Series (or WS as they call it in MLB merchandising circles). I’m not saying that it’s even likely to happen, but it’s fun to think about. Imagine how electrified this city would be. And there would be no excuses for not getting into it either, since everybody’s team is in the game. I can’t even imagine what would happen to the fans of the losing team, but whatever happened, it would be fun to say that we were alive when it happened. I’m not so sure that Ron Santo could take all of the excitement, but hey, he deserves to finally see the Cubs in the WS if you ask me.
